My friend, Sean Howard, is an amazing artist. He decided to paint portraits of our ‘orphans-no-more’ and donate the proceeds to A Future and a Hope!
He put us on his blog!

A Topeka, Kansas tax return preparer has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for filing false federal income tax returns, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today. He was also ordered to more than $209,000 in restitution.
33-year-old John Karundo Mukundi, originally from Kenya, pleaded guilty to 14-counts of making false claims and 12-counts of wire fraud.
In Kenya’s technology past over the past four years there have been some hallmark moments that have began waves and changes that shifted the course of history in technology here. Contacts, coffees and conversations have been sparked in boardrooms, hallways, Skunkworks meetings, cafes and nowadays places like Nairobi’s iHub.

Two years ago, however, there was one discussion that much like a pendulum, swung into place a series of events that few have looked back to connect the dots to.
We frequently write about all amber and their conferences and it was in February of 2010 that they staged the inaugural Mobile Web East Africa conference in Nairobi. Afrinnovator’s Will Mutua was there in person to live-blog the two days with a series of curated tweets and tidbits on the proceedings. During this, however, at one segment in the first day’s program Mr. Peter Arina, then Chief Commercial Officer at Safaricom took to the stage to deliver an address on mobile internet usage in Kenya.
During his speech and the subsequent Q&A, he was challenged and Safaricom lambasted on their approach with developers, their openness to business ideas and the developer community and their pricing strategy for products for the Kenyan market. And unlike in today’s conferences where most of this happens in the “backchannel” on social networks, this happened in the ballroom at the Intercontinental in Nairobi and was preserved and documented through Twitter mostly.
This may have seemed like a mere afternoon spat with a few loud voices in the room, but it set forth what can only be seen as a shift in how the M-Pesa founding company communicates. Just over 3 weeks later and Safaricom formally took to social networks Twitter and Facebook and have since become somewhat of a beacon of what corporate social media looks like in the East Africa region. They then put it to the community to vote and nominate leader who would work with the telecommunications provider to mend their relationship in what has come to be known as the Safaricom Innovation Board (though not sure what the status on this is at present).
Since then their approach, availability and openness has dramatically improved and they are quick to acknowledge and listen if not respond to developers. Given not all of these initiatives have born fruit, the point is that they began to listen and participate; be it from senior leadership in the company to internal staff.
Mobile Web East Africa returns to Nairobi on the 22nd and 23rd of February with the aim of taking the mobile monetisation & content creation dialogue to the next level. Taking place at the Southern Sun in Westlands, the conference promises to trigger conversations and thought that could shape not only the country, but the rest of the region in the mobile space. Here are 5 reasons why Mobile Web East Africa is a “must-attend” this year:
1. PanAfrican Perspective
Speaking to top local blogger Bankelele recently about the event once this week, he mentioned what made the inaugural conference worthwhile for him was to see another African market and their progress in mobile juxtaposed with the Kenyan market. Be it advertising spend, successful campaigns and rich insights into what was happening in and around Kenya and South Africa.
The rich information and geographical spread made for a fine time in what Bankelele frequently refers to as “reading the tea leaves” for the Kenyan market. This year, a greater regional focus with a lens on Kenya but an eye on Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda means the principles, pointers and practices shown at the conference will keep Africa and East Africa at center stage.
2. Audience and Ambience
I attend a range of conferences every year and one thing that gets my attention is the organiser’s approach towards audience interaction. Having spoken at previous all amber events, it’s no secret I appreciate their “roundtable” format. Sparking stimulating conversations with fellow participants and with the panel at the event is one of the reasons we had the Safaricom debate in the first place and always leads to rousing discussions.
3. Scintillating Speakers
The speaker list this year is impressive. A variety of local, regional and international names jetting in to speak. Multi-platinum record label Roc Nation will have their Head of Digital Briant Biggs speaking. Not to mention one of the world’s top 50 women in mobile entertainment, Emma Kaye of bozza.mobi. Regional speakers include Johan Nel of Umuntu Media and Emeka Okoye of Vinkantti Software while locally we can expect Karanja Macharia, CEO of Mobile Planet, Jessica Colaco of iHub Research and Taha Jiwaji of Bongo Live! among others.
Full disclosure: I will also speaking at the event.
4. Startups & App-Developer Subsidy
For app developers or those who are part of start-ups, there is a 50% subsidy for you to attend. Conditions for eligibility are any of the options below:
They are also happy to consider applications from individuals representing NGOs and Academia. To apply you can email info(@)allamber.co.uk. For a list of testimonials from people who have attended using the subsidy and more details you can go here.
There will also be an App Developer Competition at #MWEA2012 where your app gets voted on and the winner at the event stands to get $1,500 worth of advertising spend on the InMobi network, free entrance to the conference (a refund where applicable) and the pitch before the audience, not to mention their subsequent applause. More on that here.
5. The Future of Mobile
Afrinnovator’s been doing plenty of prospecting on what the future of mobile looks like on the continent in 2012. And Kenya or as most are beginning to christen it “Silicon Savannah” sets out to prove worthy of the title. With the convergence of some of the smartest minds in the industry and stakeholders from all across the value chain in mobile present in the room we can expect to do better than just read the tea leaves, but brew up a piping hot cup as well.
All things considered, this event ranks as a “Must-attend” and Afrinnovator intends on keeping you posted on developments and proceedings in the buildup to Mobile Web East Africa 2012. Register here.
The Georgia Supreme Court is hearing an appeals case today for Kevin Martin, who is appealing his conviction in the 2008 New Year’s Eve death of Peter Mwangi. Martin was convicted of stabbing Mwangi to death in a fight stemming from a disagreement over an open door. In the trial, jurors were allowed to see portions of a videotaped interrogation in which he invoked his right to an attorney and said “Oh, God, have mercy upon my soul” upon learning of Mwangi’s death.

Kenya’s Pay TV provider, Smart TV, is reported to have shut down its operations and left the country. The provider is reported by Business Daily as having failed to secure funding to expand its operations in the country. The move will leave over 2000 without services pay tv services.
The move will leave only Wananchi Group owned Zuku TV as the only challenger to MultiChoice;s local domination. Zuku TV has reported that it has gained a subscriber base of around 35,000 within the last few months of roll-out.
Smart TV launched in Kenya in late 2010 with Swedish investors, Next generation broadcasting, partnering with Transmex to raise the required investment. The provider then leased broadcasting signals from Signet which is owned by the government through KBC. But even before Smart TV could fully roll-out, it faced lawsuits from Kenyan mainstream media owners accusing it of using its content without paying royalties. The court ruled in favour of NGB but the group was not ready for the battle ahead.
Contacted, PS Ministry of Information said;
“This business is very difficult to invest in if you have no plans for content development. It is a lesson for the many Kenyans wanting to invest in the sector. It is even complicated for those wanting to invest in the complicated infrastructure. I am however told that no one has lost any money here since majority were given a free set-top box. Some are in arrears. Let those who claim to have lost the money comes forward.”
Business Daily reported that Mohammed Nyaoga, chairman of Transmex, said that the directors of the firm would soon meet to decide if subscribers will be refunded the money they invested on decoders and un-utilised subscription.
Only less than 1% of Kenya’s over 40 million population has access to pay tv services with DSTV having subscriptions of over 100,000 while Wananchi Group has subscriptions which might soon be approaching 40,000.

Today we are announcing Ushahidi’s Open Source Badges initiative. This project makes it easy for developers to find badge image resources to include in their projects and Ushahidi deployers to create cool badges to award their users. These are badge images in a variety of categories which can be used in Ushahidi or Crowdmap deployments or other services.
These badges are broken down into “badge packs”. For example, the Locations pack is a simple grouping of badges that follow a travel theme, with badges highlighting landmarks from countries around the world. The Ushahidi pack is a group of generic badges that the Ushahidi team has put together. New packs are expected soon, with contributions from the community and designers from other projects as well.
How can you use this as an Ushahidi administrator? Deployers of newer versions of the Ushahidi Platform and current users of Crowdmap have access to all of these badges already. Simply log into your admin panel and browse to the Manage->Badges settings page to get started. As an example, you may award the 25 Star badge to a user who has sent in 25 approved reports. This can be a manual process where you assign badges to users or set up Action Triggers to do this automatically. Just experiment with the platform to come up with interesting achievements to award your users.
We need your help! This collection of open source badges belongs to the community. If you’re a designer, developer or just interested in all things badgy, you can support this initiative. Your efforts will impact a multitude of projects, ranging from projects that crowdsource information in crisis and disaster situations to projects that reward people for submitting delicious pictures of cheeseburgers. Please check out our badge site for more information.
We’re really excited to see what everyone comes up with. We hope to see the badge image repository grow so other projects can get some value out of our open source badge initiative. Let us know in the comments what you come up with!

JACKAL NEWS - A supposedly married woman called Kenya’s explicit Classic FM radio to discuss how her husband now demands anal sex, in a shocking breakfast discussion that is shinning spotlight on media ethics and nascent sexual orientation.
guest post on a visit to Haiti, two years after the earthquake where it's an odd mix of NGO's, dollars, insecurity and voodoo
Getting There: Only British Airways gets you there with change over stops in London, New York (or other US airport), then on to Haiti for about $2,500...always with a one night sleep over and 22 hours flight time in total. You can use Kenya airways too via Dubai, Paris, Miami then Haiti and for that you use a UK Visa
The airport (Toussaint Louverture International Airport) is pretty fast as long as you have your visa... You require a UK visa or US Visa to be admitted in to the country. Unique: They have a band playing all the time to welcome you into the country. They also have uniformed casual laborers who offer to push your trolley from the clearance office to the pick up point about 200m for a small fee.....however the trolleys at the airport are not free like in Kenya...its $10 for one.
Getting around: Locals mostly use matatus which are called tap tap. Taxis are not readily available and they are not colour coded or marked or parked in a certain areas..... They are few private vehicles, and take these at your own risk.
There are parking boys are on the streets and when there is traffic they dust your windscreen and car with a dirty dry rag and expect you to pay something small.
They have two main highways. Also there's no parking lane on the streets. The roads are very narrow so people park half on the kerb and half on the road that causes mad traffic.... but the President is escorted everywhere by local police and UN police.
Insecurity Getting around you feel very insecure as riots are the norm and you see people walking with placards and complaining about the president, political affairs or the NGOs. This is because foreigners are targeted - so if you don't speak fluent French, and look exotic, you're advise to walk with a local or use a driver wherever you go. Basically, if you work for an NGO, you’re a hostage (biggest targets for kidnapping) who rarely walks more than 100 metres.
Business & economy: The country is run by 1% of the population... and there's an absolute divide between the poor and rich. Its not surprising to see an Aston Martin, and rich people withdraw money from the banks on Friday because they are scared they might collapse over the weekend - so by Friday afternoon you cant find money in the bank!
You can use dollars or gouds (Haitian currency) to trade, but the ATM's do not dispense dollars. In October 2011, dollars started disappearing from the country as people were hedging against inflation and it became so bad that from December you could not get any dollars from the bank - and some organizations had to send money in from neighboring country and then have G4S transport it here so that they could pay for their expats and operations.
As is in most places, suburbs are next door to the slums and they have mass graves due to the earthquakes. Its mountainous and hilly and houses are built on the hills in an unfathomable way.
Two years after the earthquake, there are still camps (in the form of tents) in the middle of the CBD where the displaced people stay. e.g. in the park next to Hilton Hotel. Gangs have been formed in the camps and they are responsible for kidnapping of NGO staff to solicit for money from the NGOs. The gangs are so good and efficient that if your wallet is stolen in the city, and you know a gang member in that area code, they will get it back for you for a fee with everything intact!
Communications My roaming line is expensive its like Kshs. 180 per minute without taxes (post paid), and local calls to Kenya cost about $2. They are hotspots in a few expatriates restaurants.
Where to Stay: Hotels are like $140 -160 and these include Le Manoir $140, El Rancho $130, Ibolele $155 while Karibe, a 5 star is $320. Electricity is very unstable and generators are used a lot.
Customer service: is a thing of the past it takes at least 40 minutes to get your order in most restaurants... and once you finish eating they clear the table and don’t present the bill....and when you ask for it, it takes another 30 minutes.....so you're advised to ask for the food and the bill together ..Walking out without paying is also an option as it actually takes them long to notice as its not an area of priority. Despite this food is expensive, and for a nice meal the cheapest is ~$15. The main local dish is Rice and beans and beers cost about $2.
Shopping & Sight Seeing: The ladies mode of dressing on a day to day basis leaves nothing to your imagination....Maybe its Caribbean culture or the weather which is hot and hummmmid!!!. Also an interesting sight while walking around is seeing pharmaceuticals hawked on the street - with medicines taped around big basins.
French Is the main language here and all the newspapers are in French or creole. There are beaches & animal orphanages, but very few malls and nothing much good to shop.
They are 4 big groceries/supermarkets (like Nakumatt) where many shops and they also have very high end shops which sell some very expensive French designer stuff. Popular gift items are some very good paintings and pictures which are hung on the streets and in the cultural centres.

Odd points: Voodoo is the order of the day its their culture and people carry anointing oil. It's no surprise to read in the papers or watch news of someone found walking with skulls. They have festivals and carnivals to celebrate it. and they drink a liquid which makes their eyeballs turn back to their heads and then parade in the streets doing their rituals. Creepy stuff! As with all Caribbean countries, reggae is the in- thing, but there is even voodoo music which plays in all the clubs (at a faster beat with drums and chants).

Kenyan runner Vivian Cheruiyot won the prestigious Laureus Award Monday, being chosen as the best Sportswoman of the Year ahead of a star-studded cast.
The award comes as a tonic after she missed out on the IAAF's award last November to Australia's Sally Pearson in what many had seen as a near-certainty for the diminutive long-distance runner after an astonishing year.
Cheruiyot picked up gold medals in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the World Championships in Daegu last year in stunning fashion, having earlier won the world cross country title.

For a while it had been assumed that 3.5 inch is the standard screen size for the smartphone, more-so because of Apple which was there since the formative years of the smartphone. Apple defined the smartphone and since the first iPhone, other manufacturers got something to build on when developing a smartphone. And hence due to the previous numbers where Apple led in smartphone numbers, mostly in the premium markets like the US and Europe. This has since changed and bigger screen real estate phones are being developed in their droves, with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II shaping the 4 inch niche. This has gone further and we currently have the 5.3 inch Samsung Galaxy Note.
Made me think, the numbers still lie on the 3.5 inch since Apple has persistently stuck to 3.5 inch smartphones. Another 3.5 inch phone is the budget Samsung Galaxy Ace sold by O2. This is a smartphone that lies in the mid-range and the features and pricing match well. 3.5 inch tend to strike a balance between male and female users, the latter of whom tend to prefer small screens, 3.5 and below work for them. For the bigger fingers and those who value their screen real estate for more visual juice, 4 inch is standard. The Galaxy S II and LG Optimus are some of these smartphone which sell for the screen size, among many other features.
Most of the smartphones on the lower end have lesser screen sizes of upto 2.8 inches as seen on the Huawei Ideos that has been quite a sensation for the budget constricted user mainly in Africa. But things change, I wont be suprised when we see random changes like some we see in simulation future technology videos of transparent displays. That is not in a so near future even though I wouldn’t mind being surprised positively, since there are already interactive windows and window pane displays.

The world’s most populous Muslim country has decided to take Twitter’s decision to censor tweets on a country by country basis. The government of Indonesia is studying the country’s citizens behaviour on Twitter with the intention of punishing those who go out of their way to annoy others online. the government of Indonesia, however, such measures may not be enough.
The country’s Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring, according to Jakarta Globe, said that he is aware that Twitter is full of anonymous accounts which are used to attack persons online. He said he has received complaints against such tweeps.
He added;
“We are now studying it. Because if they really violate [laws] and insult people, they could be reported as spam. Then their [accounts] could be closed by Twitter officials,”
The minister said that he will be relying on the country’s Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE) Law, to punish those who commit crimes like warrant legal charges: pornography, gambling, threats, fraud and blasphemy. The crimes attracts a penalty of between 7 to 12 years in prison.
But a popular Indonesian blogger, Wicaksono, told the Jakarta Globe that the ministry will just be showing that it has too much time in its hands if it will pursue that plan. He said that there are many interpretations of “Insulting” which cannot be decided by a government. The blogger is also saying that the existence of the anonymous accounts is just for fun and should not attract so much interests from the government.
The House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Pramono Anung, agreed with Wicaksono, according to Jakarta Glob saying that people need to learn from the criticism of the anonymous tweeps instead of trying to silence them.
He said;
“A limitation or monitoring is not needed. This is a democratic country. If someone thinks that he is being defamed please [report the case], but special monitoring for anonymous accounts, that’s just unnecessary,”
The Indonesian government has reportedly shut down more than 983,000 web sites containing porn materials. Indonesia has more than 55 million Internet users with the country having the 5th largest number of Twitter users after US, Brazil, Japan and UK. The country has close to 20 Million Twitter users according to this report.

Edward Nyanaro is not gay, but Rayban – the character he plays in the upcoming SHUGA II drama – is. The issue of homosexuality stayed well out of the first serving of Shuga, but producers had to address it in the second part of the series after research focus groups named it as a growing impediment to the fight against HIV in Kenya.
Rayban is young, gay and very well a part of Kenyan society – something the role forced Edward to realise.
Edward was nervous when he took on the role, but it was a challenge and a responsibility he was willing to embrace. Producers and directors worked with him to make him relax into the role of Rayban, so that the message comes across.
Though talking about it is hard enough, Edward knows that it’s going to get tougher after his friends, family and other Kenyans watch Shuga: Love, Sex, Money. His role as a gay man is meant to enforce safe sex practices among the gay community in Kenya, and highlight

Globetech, a Thailand digital mapping services provider has filed a lawsuit against Nokia and Navteq, its mapping subsidiary overcopyright violation. Globetech is seeking punitive damages of 540 million baht($17.5 million)
“This is the first legal case in which a Thai company has sued global firms [Nokia of Finland and Navteq of US],” Wichai Saenghirunwattna, general manager of Globetech told the Bangkok Post.
By suing, they seek to show how digital map content is growing with the assistance of smartphones and the digital map market in Thailand has an annual growth of 200-300% annually. And Mr Wichai said that the investigative team found out that Nokia’s Ovi Map supplied by Navteq violated the map’s content copyright.
The company had sent a warning letter last year which started negotiations that have since broken down resulting in the court case filed in the 5th of October to the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court.
One Nokia executive said on condition of anonymity that they are aware of the suit adding, “We are monitoring the situation and studying the details. We’ll take any necessary steps to defend ourselves.”

ALL ABOUT ME
I used to live in a place called Kodioga where I was born. I live with my grandma, grandpa, my aunti and uncles. I did not spend lots of my time with my mom because she always woke up early in the morning and went to look for a job. I really loved my grandma. Her name is Josephine. She used to cuddle me around her and tell me stories. I was the really most loved by her because I was her first grand daughter.
After a year my grandparents died. That is when all my sadness began. Even my aunts died but only one survived. She left and went to get married. My uncles also died but Chege survived. Then I went to stay in Kisumu. I lived a sorrowful life. Then my aunt Betty took me and I went to stay with her in Yala. I was only six. I would cook, clean the house, and go to fetch water. She used to sell alcohol and bang. Her friend Lilian also helped her in selling those thing.
One day after she hade finished making her alcohol she went and dug under a banana a tree then hid it there. There were two boys who saw her hide the alcohol. After everybody had slept the boys went and dug there and drank the alcohol.
In the morning when Betty’s customer came, she could not find the bottle which had the alcohol. She came directly to me thinking that I had drunk the alcohol. That day I was not given food and at night I slept in a maize farm. In the morning is when she saw a boy carry the bottle. Even if I could go home, I was really angry. Then months passed. One day Betty cooked meat and ugali. She ate it all. Then when I was playing with my friends we started telling stories about how good or bad our parents were. Then when I told the story of Betty denying me food they were shocked. One day when my friend and I got angry to each other she went and told betty my story. When I went at home Betty removed her belt and started caining me. She told me that she had denied me food because my mom did not even sent money for me to be fed.
Life past on and on. Then one day we were all jailed. We had to eat the ugali that looked like grits with cabbage. At that time I did not like cabbage so I would wait for breakfast. Then Betty’s friend helped us to escape.
I really wished that Betty would have not been my aunt. One time when I went to buy chapatis, Betty told me that my mom had died. I threw away the chapatis and started crying. I could not eat or talk to anybody. When we went to the burial I knew that I would never see her ever again.
We came back with Betty to Yala. Then she got arrested for six months. Her friend took Betty’s two children and left me there. I could not enter in the house because it was locked. A woman named Nyalego who knew my mom took me. But life was still bad. I washed her class six girls clothes and did all the duties. While they ate I only drank porridge once a day.
Then by magic Sarah’s grandma came and took me. She raised me, took me to school and in return I always had good grades so I would show that I am willing to learn.
One day when I was at school, the head teacher called me. I saw daddy & Ben. Ben talked to me about the help you wanted to give me. I felt like my happiness was coming back.
Then here I am. Even people in Gem do not believe that I am Carol’s daughter. Sometimes I just feel like I am in a place protected by angels.

Though the chukudus look pre-industrial, local residents say they date from the 1970s, when Congo's economy and government began to collapse under the rule of then-dictator Mobutu Sese Seko and people had to improvise services from schools to heavy transport.
Available in three models -- small, medium and large -- the chukudu is a marvel of practical engineering and endurance. It has become the donkey of eastern Congo -- a beast of burden that hauls vegetables in the good times and fleeing people in the bad. Purely utilitarian, chukudus are rarely painted or personalized. The most common flourishes are mudflaps for their wooden wheels. And unlike the minibuses of Nairobi, chukudus rarely inspire nicknames.

A funeral service will be held for musician Stella Mwangi’s father, Jeff Mwangi Kwirikia, in Norway this Friday before he is transported back to his Maragua home for burial. Preparations have already begun at the musician’s home, ahead of the burial, which is in keeping with his wishes.
According to Norwegian website the foreigner, the funeral service will be held at Ullensaker.
Over the weekend, friends and family gathered for a memorial ceremony in Oslo to remember the 54-year-old who was killed in a hit-and-run road accident last week.
The driver turned himself in two days after the January 31 incident and has since been charged with manslaughter. He admits hitting Kwirikia, who was riding his bicycle at the time, but insists that he is not guilty.
He states that he was driving well below the speed limit.
The late Jeff’s family is still coming to terms with the sudden death of their loved one. Insiders say Stella is still having a hard time coping with the incident.

A drug tipped for widespread use to prevent breast cancer in post-menopausal women also accelerates loss of bone density, thus potentially boosting the risk of fractures, a study published on Tuesday said.
Exemestane — brand name Aromasin — is part of a drug class called aromatase inhibitors, which lower levels of the oestrogen that some breast cancers need in order to grow.
Canadian bone specialists took a look at a group of patients who had taken part in a study into the effectiveness of exemestane among 4,500 healthy women with a worrying family history of breast cancer.
Overall, the big study showed that the drug was highly effective, reducing the risk of breast cancer by almost two-thirds.
The bone sub-study looked at 351 women who had been taking either exemestane or a dummy lookalike pill and whose bone density was measured with hi-tech scanners.
After two years, women taking exemestane had a high loss of bone density at a common fracture point in the wrist called the distal radius, and also at the lower end of the tibia, compared with their counterparts on placebo.
The exemestane users also had an eight-percent decline in the thickness of cortical bone, which comprises the protective outer shell of the bones.
That finding in particular is worrying because nearly four out of every five fractures in old age occur in cortical bone. These accidents are a huge source of disability.
“Women considering exemestane for the primary prevention of breast cancer should weigh their individual risks and benefits,” says the study, headed by Angela Cheung of the University Health Network in Toronto.
“For women taking exemestane, regular bone monitoring plus adequate calcium and vitamin D supplementation are important.”
The paper is published online by the journal The Lancet Oncology.
A romper is indeed a one piece wonder that evokes different emotions from different people. There are those who love it and there are those who cannot stand even the sight of it.
When I think of heat, I try to think of any clothing item that can be worn to make one feel comfortable and free. Hence the romper comes to mind.
I like the way they have the appearance of chic high-waist shorts paired with the same print/color of top.
Rompers are light and of course they are tiny. I think they are strictly meant to be worn in hot weather.
Like I said earlier, Rompers are one of those items that can either work for you or not! So your body will also determine whether you can rock a romper or not. They are meant for the petite as you might end up looking all wrong if you squeezed into a romper and you are full figured.
Rompers were first invented as playsuits for little children seeing as they are light, children can feel free and comfortable to run around in them without feeling restricted. Hence, I would also recommend them as the ideal wear for chilling in the house, as beach wear and best of all for a trip to the mall (Since it’s a one piece taking it off and putting it back on is easy as you try on clothes).
This little number can work for a night out, depending on the style. You can wear them with a belt to give them an even more chic look.
For day wear, you should pair your cute romper with a cute espadrilles or sandals and for a night out, a pair of cute high heels to give you the endless legs look.
Rompers are fun, they are cute and they extremely chic. If you’ve got the body and guts for them then by all means invest in as many rompers as possible
.

App Developer SHIHEMBETSA EDNA MUGOSHI from JKUAT University showing her app to Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore
Huawei and Safaricom have today awarded prizes to the top 5 winning android applications entered in the first inter-universities Huawei Android Applications Challenge (HAAC) under the Telecom Seed for the Future programme. The programme is a partnership signed in June 2011 is between Safaricom and Huawei on one hand and Moi, JKUAT and University of Nairobi on the other hand.
The 5 winning applications were;
At the ceremony, Li Dafeng, President of Huawei East and South Africa Region said,
“Today’s Huawei Android Applications Challenge awards are an important milestone in the country’s ICT industry efforts to create linkages with learning institutions, and our partnership with local universities in pursuit to increase knowledge transfer to bridge the digital divide, which is a key pillar to Huawei’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy.
We hope that through such initiatives, we can continue tapping and promoting local talents especially in the universities to increase localized content, and spur growth and development towards the achievement of vision 2030.”
Since June 2011, around 87 students have received training at Huawei’s East Africa training center along Mombasa Road. Another 32 have undergone in-job training at the facility while 5 have already been employed in the industry.
Most of the key university representatives were of the opinion that no country can develop by letting others solve its problems. Kenya needs to start enabling locals to innovate by teaching and delivering the right skills for the market. Most of the academics also were of the opinion that universities need not produce graduands who seek jobs after college but we need more of those who will look for work to do after that.
Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore was very honest in his analysis where he said that most of the western companies which have been in the Kenyan market for ages have not managed to bring in the expertise, investments and capacity which Huawei has done in a very short time.
He Added:
“Being the leading integrated communications firm in the country, Safaricom has an important role to play in supporting creativity and technological innovations that make a difference in the lives of Kenyans.
We will continue to identify opportunities for collaboration with other ICT solution providers and institutions of higher learning to support the development of relevant Kenyan applications content. This will in turn improve the uptake of data services in this market.”
Huawei brought into Kenya the most affordable smartphones and tablets which have enabled more Kenyans to be digitally connected unlike before where most of the handsets were either dumb fones or some very highly priced and overrated feature phones. Most of those who were exploiting instead of honestly bringing innovation into the African markets are exiting in a huff. 90% of data access in kenya is through the Safaricom network.
Officiating the launch, on behalf of the Minister for Information and Communication Hon. Samuel L. Poghisio, Ambassador Bruce Madete said, “I would like to commend Huawei and Safaricom for this initiative to address the challenge for local content. Over 25% of Kenyans now have access to the internet, majority of whom access the internet through their mobile phone. It is now time to develop services and products to reach these millions of Kenyans through new media.” The Ministry of Information and Communication through the ICT Board have come up with the Tandaa Digital Content grant to support products and services developed for the Internet and mobile phone.
The challenge whose theme was ‘Enriching Life Through Communications’ attracted applications in Education, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Health, Farming, among others.

An overwhelming favourite of most Nairobi sushi lovers, Westland’s Furusato definitely has more going for them than just its amazing location.
Spacious, calming neutral interiors, al fresco dining space and plentiful safe parking; Furusato Japanese Restaurant has an understated warmth that makes an exotic dining experience effortless for even the most ignorant sushi eaters.
Furusato serves up a hefty menu that showcases the best of Japanese and Korean cuisine. Too many choices? When in doubt, the experienced and polite staff is always ready to help.

Capital Lifestyle started off with some comforting Miso Soup. A savoury broth integral to Japanese cuisine, Miso Soup is always known for its cancer-fighting properties. Furusato’s version was deliciously simple and unlike another Nairobi competitor, does not drown out the delicate flavours with huge amounts of white onions.
TIP: It may be strange to see people drinking Miso Soup with chopsticks and not a spoon, but that’s the right way to enjoy a bowl of steaming hot Miso Soup! Thanks to the smaller design of the Japanese soup bowl, use both hands to hold the bowl and drink the soup straight from the vessel just like you were sipping a cup of tea. Since miso doesn’t dissolve, use your chopsticks to mix the ingredients in the bowl and to pick out the smaller bits.
Furusato’s Tuna Pancakes is a must try! More Korean than Japanese, Chamchijeon, is a delicious way to eating tuna without the fishiness that some of us may not enjoy so much.

Udon is a staple in Japanese cuisine. A thick wheat noodle, Udon is known for it’s chewy texture and sometimes, challenging to eat with chopsticks as splashing yourself with broth is a common experience for amateur chopstick users.
Furusato’s Tempura Udon combines the best of both worlds, golden-fried lightly-battered prawns with soft and chewy noodles!

As sashimi-grade fish usually is shipped “superfrozen” by dry ice, Furusato’s sashimi was undeniably fresh but on the stiff side, which was most noticeable with the tuna. Instead of melting in your mouth and draping over your chopsticks with a striking sheen; the carefully cut raw tuna lacked lustre, was far from the buttery soft texture and at times, broke in segments.

Teba! Or chicken wings in Japanese, is everyone’s favourit Oriental version of Fried Chicken! Bless the fallen chickens!
The Japanese have surely outdone themselves with their take on chicken wings. Unlike its Western counterpart, the Japanese opt to serve their wings without an oil-soaking batter. Instead, to ensure that the wings remain succulent on the inside and crispy on the outside, frying them twice is a common practice. Dressed in a bath of special sauce, Furusato is one of the restaurants in Nairobi that are doing saucy fried chicken wings differently, with more spice and exotic flavours.
Served on a hotplate, Furusato’s Teriyaki Chicken arrives at your table sizzling and crackling with flavour. The perfect mix of soy sauce, Mirin, and sugar or honey make this Teriyaki sauce incredibly desirable. Sauteed with a diverse range of seasonal vegetables such as asparagus and sprouts, the chicken was perfectly sauteed until tender.
Furusato also features a lot of Korean choices; but I guess another visit dedicated to only Korean cuisine will be required. However, if you’re going Korean at Furusato, try the Jap Chae! After Kimchi, Jap Chae is perhaps the most famous Korean noodle dish, and Furusato’s is arguably the best in Nairobi. Made from sweet potato noodles and stir-fried in sesame oil with various vegetables – Jap Chae will not disappoint!
Always busy, make sure you reserve a table at Furusato in advance to avoid any hiccups!

Looks like the Pay-TV, Smart TV, had a not-so-smart strategy as they're closing up shop. Smart TV hit the Kenyan market hard with their "Are you ready for 2012" marketing campaign, referring to the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting in 2012. Well, Smart TV themselves weren't ready for 2012 and have gone off air. They've hardly been operational for a year and have already joined GTV in the forgotten archives.
Oooh Smart Tv is dead in Kenya..RIP. According to Businessdailyafrica, Mohammed Nyaoga, chairman of Transmex, which owns Smart TV, revealed the acute lack of funding for the project.
“We have closed shop and are currently shopping for an international investor following the exit of the Swedish investors – Next Generation Broadcasting (NGB) — which has put us into financial constraints,”
And the directors of the firm would meet on Friday to decide if subscribers will be refunded the Sh5, 000 they invested on decoders and the subscription fees for the month of January.
As we mourn the untimely death.. I have a question about the Decoders. Can the Smart Tv decoders be used to access the content of Dstv or Zuku? Unfortunately, Smart Tv has left more than 2000 subscribers stranded. Can these 2000 subcribers move to either Dstv or Zuku and use the same decoders?
The essence of the *iHub_ is epitomized by 5 key principles: Innovation, Community, Entrepreneurship, Business Mentoring and Research.
In the last two years, we’ve had numerous activities that have directly contributed to these principles. These include the events we’ve held, the initiatives that have spun off the iHub such as m:lab East Africa, iHub Research, Pivot East and all the partnerships we’ve forged with all our corporate partners.

One of the key driving forces behind this is the need to facilitate synergy among community members in a bid to catalyze innovations from the community.
Focusing on this, we’re putting out an open call to the different User Groups that have shaped up in the last few months to come and help us organize meetups every month. We are seeking to get different stakeholders to interact with the community.
We’re looking at the following groups (Please note that meetups are not limited to this):
Please email us before Friday Feb the 17th if you wish to either take lead on any user group meetups, participate in any and/or if you have any discipline that you’d wish a user group be formed around. From this, we will then follow up and have discussions around meeting schedules and proposed activities.
Independently Organized
It is our hope that these User groups will be independently run. These will be volunteer groups that meet on a regular basis to discuss and share information on a variety of technical topics. This will be an excellent, inexpensive way to receive technical content, meet with peers and like minded individuals to get more out of the different products, technologies, and resources that one is interested in.

Funny how it always goes huh?
It starts out great right, you meet this wonderful exciting person who has all the qualities you want in a person… your sense of adventure is piqued…you’re curious about them you want to know everything you can about them. You go out on dates or stay home and every minute spent with them is magical! A deep abyss of emotions begin to well up inside you… you are excited at the idea of new prospects. All of a sudden everything seems easier, better, your days are sunnier, and that person has somehow managed to make everything bearable… Now you have something to look forward to. You involve yourself completely immersing yourself in new activities that have the word US in them and not the boring Me.
Then begins phase two, now you’re making plans together. The cracks have already started to show but you’re still in denial, still busy making excuses for him. Your still wary haven’t given yourself to your other half completely, but you are halfway there… now you’re looking out for signs, playing the he loves me, he loves me not game wondering where it’s going. What the ultimate goal is. The problem with this stage is you’re already halfway there so you’re already caught. Already stuck. You just don’t know it yet.

Phase three. You are still in the honeymoon period but now you are beginning to want more.Beginning to ask the BIG questions. What about marriage? What about kids? What about investing? What about our life together?
This is where most relationships crack.
The pressure, from the questions combined with the issues stemming from the excuses you were busy making for him which you now don’t and the everyday pressures of just being in a relationship, builds… Now it’sdo or die. Its either he commits or… Or what though? This is the problem with most relationships. The ultimatums. The contradictions. The pressure.
We need to take time for ourselves before we get into relationships, time to get to know ourselves, what we like… what we don’t like… To get in tune with ourselves. Not to take time is to do a great disservice to both ourselves and those we get involved with. It’s important to be able to prioritise and put yourself first because that way you are selfish enough to take time for yourself and give him time to himself too. Forever is a long time and relationships are a lot like flowers; if you overwater them they die.
Most relationships end because one partner feels suffocated, and doesn’t know how to communicate that probably because you are so overbearing and they don’t want to get into IT with you, you need to remember to put yourself aside and try and put yourself into your partners shoes. Do you understand their stance? Does it have merit? And you need to learn how to apologise for your wrongs. It’s also very important to remember that the ultimate goal is to be happy together and that takes compromise. Sometimes you have to let go of the small things, don’t hold on to the little fights it’s not worth it! Squabbling over EVERY LITTLE THING is tiresome and not healthy… You need to stay happy and healthy and when in a relationship, emotional health plays a huge role in this.
Above all, you need to be patient and you need to remember what your stance was going in. If you had always wanted to eventually get married and had discussed this with your partner then that’s fine keep pursuing your goal but if you hadn’t and now you’re friends think that it’s a good idea for you to get married and so you are pressuring your partner, then you need to take a step back and reevaluate your stance. Don’t just jump him and start asking why he doesn’t want to marry you, that’s not fair to him!
Take your time to love yourself, indulge yourself, and enjoy yourself. It makes you a better partner and a stronger person. Be good to the person you’re with, take it easy and don’t let your baggage get in the way remember everyone is different and your previous partners faults should not be transferred onto the one your with after all the least you would expect is to be treated like you’re the only one that ever mattered so why shouldn’t you do the same? Remember the least you could do in this life is leave good memories in your wake so don’t go getting all mad when you break up and slashing his tires! What you fail to realize is that will haunt you not him. Be amicable it will probably end up hurting him more… or not… but your conscience will be clear and that is more important in the long run.
Have fun! Try to make every day more interesting than the last. You know how they say a brick could fall on your head and you could die? Well a brick could also fall on your relationship… So make every day count won’t you?

Another reason Sana resigned is cause she says her pay is SHIET and her growth is being stumped. She ASKED for a pay increase for the 4 hours of garbage radio she does every day. My goodness, her voice and Tina Kagia’s is the perfect medication for insomniacs!!
