If anyone could be said to be next in line to be President it would be Kalonzo Musyoka. He is currently the Vice President and thus the next in line. He is also the longest serving elected member and third longest serving member of parliament after President Kibaki having joined parliament as an elected Member in 1963 and Professor George Saitoti who joined October 1983 as a nominated member of parliament and subsequently as an elected member from 1988. Thereafter there is Mudavadi of the 1989 class followed by Odinga, Karua 1992, Uhuru 2001 and Kenneth, Tuju 2002 among those who have experience through serving parliament and various ministries. As the V.P comes to Boston for a Town hall meeting many will be expecting him to take questions like Martha Karua and Peter Kenneth did. In a span of 2 hours Peter Kenneth took over 40 questions in Boston unfiltered and answered all.

Fountain Enterprises Programme (FEP) again this year sold shares of what they envision to be the biggest bank in Kenya, 2016. FEP CEO John Kithaka said they currently have 1,310 shareholders of whom 73 of them invested Kshs 400,000 to Kshs 786,000 for 1 share of Kshs 400,000 that by 2016 will be worth Kshs 600 million. The other 1,237 shareholders he noted invested Kshs 200,000 to Kshs 463,000 for a share that will be worth Kshs 200 million. He also invited more investors to take more shares of Kshs 200,000 that will be worth Kshs 30 million, 2016. The 1,310 shareholders who have injected close to Kshs 1 billion will thus in four years be the primary capital base of the bank and are expected to have Kshs 291.2 billion in capital before the bank lists in Kenya Stock Exchange Market for them to cash their dream. The current share capital of all 45 banks of Kenya as per Central bank and World Bank report 2010 is Kshs 196.25 billion. Thus this bank will be about 1 ½ times bigger than all current 45 banks in the Share Capital.

“The IEBC interprets the constitution differently than we all do in the Diaspora. The key word in the constitution is that the implementation of Diaspora voting is to be done ‘progressively’,” says David Karangu. The debate over whether the Kenyans abroad will vote has started heating up. Many Kenyans abroad are not shy to say the nine commissioners of the Independent Electoral & Boundaries Commission IEBC are not deliberating and taking views to ensure a great election that grants citizens their rights is achieved. Some have pointed to the fact that multiple cases are now going through the court system against the IEBC arguing that whenever the IEBC interprets the constitution they should get it right to avoid law suits. David Karangu a successfully businessman leaving in Atlanta in response to a question asks, “If we can have secure electronic banking, why can’t we have secure electronic voting?” He answered questions that many Kenyans abroad are currently discussing.

Currently the estimated number of Kenyans living in U.S & Canada who qualify for the elections is estimated at about 600,000 voters. When the Independent Electoral & Boundaries Commission, IEBC created the voting system in Kenya they allocated 400 Kenyans to vote in the 45,000 precincts. Kenyans after doing the math and asking: How will it be possible for about 200,000 voters to descend to the 3 places Kenyans have missions if used? If the IEBC created a voting system for 400 per station in Kenya is what they are proposing achievable in U.S and Canada?

From the onset of the events unfolding, I want to record my disappointment as a Kenyan living in the Diaspora. From my analysis the Kenya Parliament is not working toward enabling the Kenyans in the Diaspora the right to vote. Using the American standards if ODM is the majority Party then I ask, “Is ODM party against Diaspora voting?” Indeed when the Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is also the head of the party was in Atlanta a question on his commitment toward the Diaspora to vote was asked. Whereas time could not allow him to reply, I nevertheless have heard no other reference of his desire to see the Diaspora vote.

It is not everyday you hear that the Kenya Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, is attending a meeting in Atlanta. To also hear it is one that will involve Kenya citizens asking questions, then as Embu Senate aspirant and citizen of Kenya I had an obligation to go listen and engage the Kenya Prime minister. I was therefore among the people who attended this function at Double Tree Hotel –Atlanta on Thursday 26th 2012 evening. I joined many Kenyans in Atlanta area and surrounding regions as we came to listen to what the Kenya Prime Minister would say about our beloved country and hear whether he is indeed the popular person the polls say he is. As I left the meeting I could hear his words, “It is time for the ‘Old Dogs’ to retire and leave politics for the ‘Young Puppies’.” And I asked myself is the P.M. Odinga headed to retirement. Is he part of the, “Old Dogs?”

“Kenya was at the same level as Singapore and South Korea in 1960. The county has not advanced in the same rate as these countries!” This statement will be used by many, even in the political arena. The World Bank records Kenya Per capita income at $1,700, Singapore at $60,000 and South Korea at $30,000. This means that if Kenya had grown as fast as Singapore, the Kenya economy would be about 35 times bigger than is today. Kenya would not have 3 million Kenyans settled outside Kenya who are there for economic opportunity. It is in this context that Kenya now needs Independent Economic Candidates so as to achieve the economic independence needed for Kenya to grow 2012 -2017 and thereafter.

Peter Gachuiri calling from St Louis commented, “A lone ranger will go nowhere.” Gachuri did not say how he established the analysis that Peter Kenneth was alone and how he was able to know how 20 million voters in Kenya are thinking. In a discussion with Attorney Njoroge Kamau of Worcester Massachusetts on the view by Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission IEBC it was noted that the process can be simplified and the following remarks put forward. “The IEBC should not try to showcase the process for Kenyans abroad is so complicated but should look for ways to ensure rights of Kenyans are granted as provided by the constitution. The IEBC should not reference a system as bad if they do not understand it very well. ” Immaculate, reference of Florida to show mail-in was not fully founded. Indeed many states in the U.S use mail in for elections even for people who do not want to go to the polls and not just for citizens abroad. To avoid the $20 per person budget which would mean if 3 million voters would cost the tax payers $60 million or more than Kshs 5 billion. However there are systems the IEBC can use without asking the proce of food to be taxed more so Kenyans abroad can vote and give each person the right to vote.

The “1 million – 1million” or “Double million” Economic Platform is the proposed economic plan Dr. Wilson Endege and team have started working on that Diaspora 2012 candidates will contest on. The platform will lead to creation of sustainable systems that will produce 1 million new jobs annually with an average income of Kshs 1 million. The platform is based on the current population growth rate of 1 million people per annum which means a demand of about 1 million new jobs every year. This platform once implemented will lead to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of Kshs 1 trillion every year from 2012 and by the year 2017 the GDP will have grown by Kshs 5 trillion. Kenya current GDP is estimated at about $65 billion or about Kshs 5 trillion. This would mean the Economic Platform for 2012 – 2017 would double the Kenya GDP in 5 years. This growth would diffuse the time bomb predicated by Hon. Peter Kenneth the current Assistant Minister of Planning, National Development and Vision 2030 in his written message, “Our disaster is the time bomb of hunger and youth unemployment that is bound to explode.”

The proposal aims at enabling Kenyans in the Diaspora, who want to serve Kenya, compete for 2012 open seats of 47 governors, 47 senators, 290 national assembly, 47 national assembly women seats and at least 500 county assembly seats. Kenya current per capita income of about $1,700 according to International Monetary Fund places Kenya as Number 154 out of 183 world countries. Per Capita income is a way of measuring the quality of life for a person in a country. The higher the per capita of a country, the higher the quality of life and security expected in that country. According to our table, Kenya is placed as a very poor country in the per capita income level $1,001 - $2,000. As Kenya approaches the 2012 elections the projected 19.4 million voters will have to decide on the quality of life they want going forward. The Kenyans will have to decide if they want to go up the scale and cross the world average like, Equatorial Guinea No. 48, Botswana 55, Gabon 56 and Libya 64, the 4 countries in Africa above the world per capita average of $10,900.

“How does the LAPSSET Project hope to be achieved with the Grand Corruption Party group in parliament?” The question was made in a harsh, tough, loud and clear tone. This a clear statement that Kenyans in the Diaspora are ready to go to war with the current parliament if it is required to save the country from corruption, especially corruption from those entrusted with leadership. As the crowd in attendance erupted in support, the Honorable Member of Parliament and Assistant Minister for foreign affairs, even though the question was not directed to him but to the P.S Ministry of Transport and in relation to the LAPSSET project took the podium to defend his fellow members of parliament and answer the question he defined as a political question. The second question was on how the project would be achieved with its close proximity to Somali and the piracy.

About two weeks ago I attended one of Peter Kenneth’s meet the people tour here in the Greater Boston area. I was mainly keen on figuring out who he was, what he had to offer and just to get a feel of how he’s handled his stuff as far as his development record was concerned. I have to say that I was impressed by what I heard and even moved an inch closer to supporting his mission of moving our beloved Kenya country to greatness.
