There’s no heartbeat,” I heard the doctor who was performing my scan say after about 40 minutes of examination.

I didn’t understand what that meant. I had gone in for my eight-week scan for my first pregnancy. He did a usual scan and then asked me to empty my bladder so he could do a TVS – a trans-vaginal scan – something that allows the doctors to examine the foetus better. “By eight weeks the heartbeat should be very visible and in your case it is not. I am sorry, this pregnancy is not viable.”

Maggie Ireri is the newest face of opinion polls in Kenya. Being an election year, she knows that every time she releases the quarterly poll, she will make headlines in nine of 10 times. She started releasing polls after American consultant Dr Tom Wolf took a sabbatical.

“The company had to release the poll results and I had to do it.”

Maggie describes herself using three adjectives – a researcher, mentor and an ambitious woman.

She has 13 years experience in research under her belt and is currently the Managing Director of Ipsos Synovate (formally Steadman), a position she has held for over one year.

Family Bank’s CEO, Peter Munyiri, has a big ambition: to transform the former building society into a top bank not just in Kenya, or the region but in Africa. Focusing on becoming a leader in the local market he says, is aiming too low. With considerable confidence and enthusiasm, he says the bank has what it takes to rise to the top of the banking industry.

It is however set to be a tough journey. Family Bank was started as a finance building society in 1984 by Titus Muya, who served for many years as managing director and is currently the chairman of the Board of Directors. In 2007, it converted into a commercial bank with its main focus being microfinance and offering services to small and medium enterprises.

Local People Lose out from Tourism Deals

It is eight o’clock at night in Narok, about 140 kilometres away from Nairobi. Ms Naisola Supejo is agitated and confused at the same time. The meager wages the mother of two earns cannot see her through the month. She’s unable to purchase medication for one of her children who is down with pneumonia.

Supejo works as a cleaner in one of the tourist hotels. Established within a community ranch just outside the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the hotel operates as an eco-tourism concern. Besides generating revenue for the investors, the venture is also meant to provide livelihoods for the local community through employment and revenue sharing. Its business is also premised on what is hailed as sound environmental principles and respect for local people and their culture.

Saving Lake Naivasha

It is believed that the amount of cash generated from the economy around Lake Naivasha has no parallels anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. For example, the horticultural and flower farms generate approximately Ksh70billion a year and employ about 30,000 people who support other people indirectly, and promote other businesses such as transport and food-related enterprises.

Despite this, there has been a big and ongoing controversy surrounding use of resources within and around the Lake. This goes back to early 1900s, when it was used as Nairobi’s principal port for Catalina flying boats that transported people and mail from Britain to South Africa. The area was to become famous for the notoriety of the white settlers who lived there particularly between the 1920s and 1940s. This was the ‘happy-valley’ lot whose carefree life inspired the 1987 movie dubbed White Mischief.

Diving into the Coral Gardens of Shimoni

Below the waves, hundreds of brightly coloured fish dart in and out of the coral. The silence is absolute, and it feels like we are swimming in a magical world.

We are in the Kisite Mpunguti marine park, just off Shimoni on Kenya’s south coast, home to over 250 species of marine life. We arrived mid-morning, driving from Diani through coastal villages. The sun is beating down, its rays reflecting off the waves like silver pennies.

Gathered on Shimoni Pier, we search the sea to catch sight of the dolphins that swim in the channel between the mainland and Shimoni. Rare humpback whales are also occasionally spotted here.

The Tuju home literally sprawls, spreading itself across the landscape like a magnificent behemoth. Walking in does not make it any less intimidating. Twin stairways coil their way upwards with a chandelier hanging in the middle. Set in such a quiet spot, the only sound is howling wind. Outside it’s green, manicured, fecund, alive. A mock waterfall gushes softly. Much further along is a real river that runs clear with ripe grass framing it on both sides. It is breathtaking. It took a year to bring the outdoors to life, I am told, with the help of a good, and it appears quite gifted, friend. Might I add, the friend was not paid a cent.

DJ Johni Celeb of Kubamba Gospel Music Show on Citizen TV – Pursuing his passion, transforming lives

The 24 year old Energy Engineering student at Kenyatta University, John Njoroge, also known as DJ Johni Celeb grew up in Kawangware and had always wanted to be a DJ. His dream came true when he had his first DJeeing gig in 2005 at Kawangaware Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) where over 1,000 people attended. They had organized the event in conjunction with his friends, where artists such as MOG and DJ Sparxx and other local artists performed. Since then, he has DJed in most parts of Kenya including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru, Kitale, Voi and Nakuru.

Brought up by his dad and aunt as his parents separated when he was about 7 years, Johni Celeb confesses his passion for music. In fact, he was a dancer up to high school. So intense was his passion that when his dad gave him money to join a driving school, he decided to pursue a 2 week crash course in DJeeying instead, which was being offered by Badilika DJs in conjunction with Kubamba-Krew at Parklands Baptist Church in 2006.

Japanese tour guide Maki Nagamatsu took a chance on Kenya twice, but it was only when she met a cute Maasai warrior that she truly fell in love with this country. By Caroline Okello

When she heard a Japanese doctor return from Kenya sing the glories of the country, her curiosity was piqued. She had to see this piece of paradise for herself. She was just 20 then, fresh out of school and working as a tour guide in Japan.

In 1989, Maki Nagamatsu set off to Kenya to experience the country for herself. She stayed for a week and mainly visited national parks. “It wasn’t much exciting, I only saw animals,” she says in her delightful Japanese accent.

A petite girl walks into our offices and humbly requests to speak to the editor. I have no idea she is Linet Masiro Munyali, also known as Size 8 in the entertainment industry. “What do they do to you when you are on stage?” I ask. see.” She responds. She is accompanied by her sister, a friend and her make up artist. “They give me a candid opinion of how I look after make up.”

She tells me as she settles down to change for the photo shoot. After a close to an hour, she emerges. “This is the Size 8 we know.” Everybody in the office agrees. The small girl is larger than life. Her experiences while growing up do not reflect the person across the table. As she opens up about her humble background and the hard work she has had to put in to emerge as one of the finest female artists today, I feel like I am watching a movie. I ask one question and she takes over the story.

The versatile Linda Muthama

LINDA MUTHAMA needs little introduction as far as music is concerned. She has a passion for music and wastes no time to make it clear that music runs in her blood.

For starters, Linda was a finalist in the first edition of Tusker Project Fame, and is also the face of Jitambue Leo, an HIV and Aids awareness campaign which featured other artistes. The campaign has been running since 2009.

“I was born in a family of musicians. My father is a music teacher and a choirmaster while my mother is an active member of the church choir,” says Linda, who emerged third during the first edition of Tusker Project Fame. She says her father inspired her most and this is why when she joined Kahuhia Primary School in Kiambu, she was already set on what she wanted to do in life. She started shaping her career immediately by singing in the choir and representing her school in different competitions.

Ojwang is still hatari in comedy. At seventy three, Benson Wanjau who is popularly known as Ojwang still manages to make people laugh and he tells Antony Ongalo that he will not be leaving the comedy scene anytime soon.

His name and face have been become synonymous with the television comedy in the country. For over 30 years, Benson Wanjau Karira, who is popularly known as Mzee Ojwang Hatari has made many Kenyans laugh through his popular comedy show, Vitimbi, that is aired on Kenya Broadcast ing Corporation every week.

Many comedians have come and gone, but Ojwang, 73, has held on, and does not show any signs of leaving the set just yet.

When Gina Din-Kariuki left her job as head of corporate affairs at Barclays Bank Kenya to start a public relations firm, most of her friends thought she was committing “career suicide.” “My friends said I was mad,” says the founder and managing director of Gina Din Corporate Communications (GDCC) with a laugh. At Barclays she had a good salary, allowances, expense account, chauffeured car and the respect that comes with a senior level management job.

But she was confined to a single client and she longed for the day she would work with clients in different sectors of the economy. Thirteen years later, her business has expanded from two employees to 70 and is growing at an annual rate of 20%. GDCC currently has 29 clients and offices in Kenya and Uganda. There are plans to launch in Tanzania.

On a cold June morning in 2006, this writer had an assignment to interview a senior executive of the hottest investor in town, EM Communications Limited. The company had been awarded a license as the first local loop operator (LLO) in Kenya and traded under the name Popote Wireless. The mood was ecstatic. Media interviews were being carried out in the company’s boardroom and local and foreign reporters trooped in and out of the massive room each eager to interview Eric Muthi, the managing director of the company.

Why Mobile Pay’s Tangaza platform is a better alternative to offerings from mobile operators. BY LUCY MORANGI

In January, a new mobile money banking and transfer system was launched. Expectations were high that Mobile Pay Ltd’s Tangaza platform would increase efficiency in provision of financial services and broaden access. Oscar Ikinu, the firm’s managing director and designer of the platform says it is unique from services offered by mobile operators in that it works across all existing networks. Existing offerings are mobile network specific meaning one requires a sim card from the operator. Users can access Tangaza’s services from any network in Kenya by dialing *321#. Tangaza also allows Kenyans without a mobile phone to open an account and send money using their I.D.s. The person uses their fingerprints to withdrawal and send money at the agent.

On stage was a group of strong, very alive and very enthused young men in saggy jeans and boots made for stomping. They leapt from one end of the stage to the other facing a frenzied audience – women screaming and men nodding; it could have been the setting for a ghetto-fabulous MTV video. In the thick of it, a young, incredibly energetic Kevin Ombajo, roaring and spitting rhymes, alternately holding out his mic so they could finish off the lines.

Many myths envelop this man who for all his media savvy, is very media-averse. He does not give interviews, and he certainly does not ever conduct them in his home. The smallest greenhouse should be 8m x 15m, wooden and costs from Ksh. 100, 000 to put up. This includes the green house structure, drip irrigation system and a tank to provide water. The cost of seedlings, maintenance costs that include payments to agronomists, supervisors and farm hands are not included. Of critical concern is the source of water. As this issue goes to press, the La Nina phenomenon continues to bite in Kenya and drought has set in.

Tunnels are small green houses and cover a small area, a 1/4 acre and below. Larger green houses cover a 1/4 and above. There are two main types of green houses, based on structure: simple tunnels which use fabricated wood and the farmer purchases polythene bags.

Listening to him strumming the guitar, it is inevitable that a sense of awe and admiration will instantly grip you. So because the skill and precision with which he plies his trade is simply amazing. Jean Pierre Nimbona is his name, but few recognise him by it. Most know him by his stage name, Kidum. Interestingly though, very few know the origin of the name ‘Kidum’.

“I was given that name at birth. The word Kidum refers to a 20 litre gallon of water. I was born a big baby, and my family likened me to a ‘Kidum’ due to my size,” he chuckles.

It’s no coincidence that Kambua Manundu works for Rauka, a gospel music show on Citizen TV. Rauka is Kiswahili for “wake up” – and Kambua has been waking up audiences wherever she goes with her drop-dead gorgeous looks and beautiful, soaring voice.

And this is no recent phenomenon; she was opening eyes back in high school, when her hymn singing in the shower
instantly stopped the chattering of fellow pupils.

Ajuma Nasenyana, 26, is stunning to look at, especially when she is at work. It’s an otherwise quiet Wednesday morning at the photo shoot for her cover, and a small crowd of admirers has gathered to watch her pout, flounce and flirt with the camera.

“She’s a complete natural,” says stylist and shoot director Grace Makosewe. “I don’t need to tell her what to do to get the right pose. She just puts on the dress and does it.” Indeed, given the natural grace with which she takes to high fashion, it is difficult to believe that once upon a time, Ajuma’s greatest ambition was to be an Olympic medal-winning runner. Or that she grew up in Turkana. Or that she is, in fact, quite the tomboy.

Even if Habida nee Moloney Ebo had never become a singer, something about her would draw the eye. As a newly wed, when she turns up for our interview the Monday following their weekend wedding, it is not surprising that she is with her new husband, Daniel Ebo. They both look just about ready to collapse with fatigue.

“We slept at 2am last night,” she says as she sinks gratefully into the chair. She spots a suggestively arched eyebrow on my end and explains.
