A 13-year-old girl and KCPE candidate at St Paul Karon Boarding and Primary School in Kitalarengan village, Nakuyen Sub Location, Kacheliba, West Pokot County, is fighting for her life after developing a heart condition two years ago.
Deborah Chepoghisio, who lives with her grandmother, says she has not been to school since the beginning of the year despite being a candidate. Speaking to the press, Chepoisyo says her illness started with chest problems where she went to a health centre and was given medication but over time the problem persisted.
The cost of her treatment, about Ksh2 million, has caused sleepless nights for her guardians, including her grandmother, with whom she lives.
The headmistress of St Paul Karon boarding and primary school, Dinnah Lonyangapoi, says the girl needs urgent intervention.
Joseph Sarich, treasurer of Topoyowo Affinity Youth Organisation, a youth rights organisation in the area, says the only way to empower the Pokot community is through education and calls on the area MP, Titus Lotee, to act quickly and rescue the girl.
