Once a vital economic lifeline connecting Kenya to Uganda and the broader East African market, the 112-kilometre Kisumu–Busia highway has deteriorated into one of the region’s most dangerous routes. Years of neglect have left the road riddled with huge potholes, eroded shoulders, and collapsing sections, with the Yala–Ugunja stretch described by motorists as “an obstacle course, not a highway.” Travellers have increasingly taken to social media to share images of stranded vehicles, damaged tyres, and flooded craters, highlighting the worsening state of the road and urging authorities to take action.
