https://nation.africa/ Minors in the North Rift region who commit less serious crimes and/or are first-time offenders will have access to alternative justice systems, while avoiding the main one. This is after courts, State organs and NGOs put measures in place measures to enhance the protection of children who come in contact with or are in conflict with the law.
The diversion process helps remove children from the main criminal justice system in what is termed as "out-of-court disposal".
Children who can go through diversion system include offenders, as well as victims and those who need protection - including witnesses.
For offending minors, Kapenguria Law Courts Principal Magistrate Stella Telewa says the system ensures that children are not free but can serve a sentence from home, go through rehabilitation or probation.
