The Kiambu County government has launched an initiative dubbed ‘Angaza Kiambu’ to switch from using the national electricity grid to solar-powered streetlights to reduce electricity bills which gobble up over one billion shillings annually. The move is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 7 of affordable and clean energy which the county plans to embrace by 2030. Speaking during the launch of the program in Thika, where over 500 lights were switched on in Thika Township, Hospital, Kamenu, Ngoliba, and Gatuayaga wards Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi issued a directive prohibiting new installations of electricity-powered streetlights and ordered replacement of existing ones.
