- 23,171 viewsFollowing Pope Francis’ funeral service, St Peter's Basilica, in Rome, finally reopened to the public, and our reporter in the Italian capital, Tony Irungu, joined the crowd and takes us on a tour inside the sumptuous 16th basilica - the world's largest church - where the Pope’s body laid in state. Hundreds of thousands of mourners from all over the world had lined up for hours throughout different days to catch a glimpse of Pope Francis’ body in a simple wooden coffin placed at the main altar of the basilica, that hosted the funeral service and masses. Ahead of the funeral, the coffin of Pope Francis was sealed in St Peter’s Basilica on Friday and the square was blocked to the public until Saturday. It is believed that over 200,000 people attended Pope Francis’ funeral in St Peter’s Square, where the basilica is located, on Saturday. In a break with tradition, the pope was buried in a private ceremony in the Santa Maria Maggiore church, rather than at St Peter's Basilica. It was the first time in over a century that a pope was laid to rest outside the Vatican. #PopeFrancis #StPetersBasilica #popefrancisfuneral 🎤 🎥 Anthony Irungu Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetoafrica Website: https://www.bbc.com/africa Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bbcnewsafrica/ Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/bbcafrica/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bbcafrica/
