More than 16,000 families evicted from marmanet forest in laikipia back in 1988 are asking the government to speed up their compensation and resettlement. The families, forced out to pave way for afforestation, say they were left in shanties and have lived in poor conditions ever since. Leaders from the marmanet forest evictees association say the forest land was later re-allocated, leaving the original settlers with nothing. Most of the evictees say they survive on casual jobs and live in overcrowded, semi-permanent houses.they are urging the government to act swiftly to restore their dignity.
