Trump visa halt: Harvard student in limbo after investing $200K - BBC Africa
Fatou Wurie and her community raised $200,000 to pay for her education at Harvard University in the United States and is months away from graduating, but now everything hangs in the balance for the Sierra Leonean student.
Students across Africa are facing new hurdles to studying in the U.S. It's after the Trump administration has directed U.S. embassies worldwide to halt the scheduling of student visa appointments, as it moves to expand social media vetting for international applicants. This directive comes amid a broader crackdown on some of America’s most prestigious universities. President Trump has criticised these institutions as being overly left-leaning, accusing them of inadequately addressing antisemitism—particularly in response to recent pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the pause on visa appointments will last “until further guidance is issued.” However, there is no clarity yet on what the vetting process will entail.
