Concerns have been raised about the rise in misuse of state led surveillance and spyware technologies in Kenya and across the East and Southern Africa. Freda Nalumansi, the research and advocacy head at Unwanted Witness, a civil society organization, said surveillance practices have increasingly been used as instruments of repression, silencing dissent and undermining fundamental freedoms. She was speaking in Nairobi at the dissemination of the organisation’s report titled “Surveillance Spyware; an Impediment on Civil Society, Human Rights Defenders and Journalists in East and Southern Africa.”
