Friends and family hugged for the first time in five years as the border between Eritrea and the Tigray region of Ethiopia opened at last. It had been closed since the outbreak of war in Tigray, in the north of the country, back in 2020. It was organised by local community leaders and activists without the explicit approval of the authorities.
But those behind it indicated that they had the blessing from officials in Tigray and Eritrea. The BBC’s Girmay Gebru travelled to the border to speak to people there.
