Rescue operations at an artisanal gold mine in the village of Lomera in DR Congo are continuing after a number of shafts collapsed over the weekend. Local reports say an unknown number of miners are trapped underground but the death toll is not yet known. The area is in South Kivu province and has been under the control of M23 rebels since they captured swathes of DR Congo's mineral-rich east earlier this year. Gold was discovered in December and thousands have flocked to the once quiet village to make their fortune.
