A section of Mount Kenya legislators is calling for the immediate replacement of the Direct Settlement System (DSS) of payment for coffee farmers, saying that the new mode of payment will kill the cooperative movement. Previously farmers used the cherry payment system where monies were channeled through the farmers’ co-operative societies. Speaking in Kirichu, Nyeri County during a forum to hear from residents their development needs, the leaders also criticized the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives, Wycliffe Oparanya for introducing a new set of reforms in Coffee Regulations without consulting farmers and the lawmakers.
