The Communications Authority has launched the Africa Broadband Mapping Systems, a continental initiative aimed at expanding internet connectivity and promoting digital inclusion across 11 Sub-Saharan African countries. The programme, led by the International Telecommunication Union with backing from the European Commission, is looking to harmonise broadband mapping to inform infrastructure investments and policy planning. The European Union has committed 15 million Euros to the project, which will finance initiatives such as connecting 1,000 primary schools to the internet. Other participating countries include Nigeria, Uganda, and Botswana, among others. The country’s broadband penetration currently stands at just 44 percent.
