Divisions in the electoral body IEBC, escalated today with the Chairperson Wafula Chebukati hitting out at the four renegade commissioners who have disowned the presidential result announced on Monday. In a hard-hitting statement, Chebukati alleged that the four commissioners pushed for the alteration of the presidential result in order to force a re-run between president-elect William Ruto and Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga. While defending his move to declare Ruto president-elect, Chebukati says the mandate to do so solely lies with him even though the four commissioners were fully involved in the tallying and verification of the presidential results. Chebukati’s statement comes a day after the commissioners led by Vice Chair Juliana Cherera disowned the results terming them as belonging only to Chebukati. The IEBC has also postponed the Kakamega and Mombasa elections scheduled for Tuesday next week.
