Azimio MPs, led by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi and Minority Whip Junet Mohamed, address the press outside Parliament after walking out during budget reading on June 15, 2023.
Members of Parliament allied to the opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition on Thursday caused a stir in the House when they staged a walkout right before the budget reading by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u.
Addressing the press outside Parliament chambers afterward, the legislators sought to explain that their action was not in protest of the budget reading per se, but instead against the proposed Finance Bill, 2023.
The MPs, led by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi and Minority Whip Junet Mohamed, took issue with the manner in which the controversial Bill sailed through the Second Reading stage in Parliament on Wednesday evening.
