Activists and lobby groups have urged the government to lower taxes on condoms, saying the taxes levied on the commodity will make the product out of reach for the majority of Kenyans. Speaking at the commemoration of the world condom day in Mathare Nairobi, the activists asked the government to close the nation’s condom shortage gap or face preventable outbreaks of HIV, and other STIs, along with unplanned pregnancies, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations. Kenyans need at least 400 million condoms annually, yet the government can only distribute 150 million condoms.
