Thirty-five Somali pirates arrived in Mumbai on Saturday (March 23), after they were captured by Indian navy commandos during an operation on board the Malta-flagged commercial ship MV Ruen a week earlier.
The pirates would be handed over to the law enforcement agencies, an official had said on Wednesday (March 20), in a departure from the navy's recent practice of rescuing vessels and crew but leaving the disarmed pirates at sea.
The exact charges against the pirates were not immediately clear, the official added. He declined to be identified as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
