The Republic of Somaliland is celebrating 33 years of independence from the Federal Republic of Somalia. This celebration was held in the capital, Hargeisa, and was led by President Musa Bihi with the citizens and the military in attendance. The event is meant to mark what citizens call Independence Day which is contested by Somalia. Somaliland officials say their country gained independence in 1991 and has since made a lot of strides socially, politically and economically. The officials are currently pushing to have the international community inclusive of the African Union to recognize them as an independent country.
