The government has launched a programme aimed at raising the country's land under irrigation from the current 711,993 acres to 1.2 million acres by 2027. The move is aimed at improving food security, wealth creation and socio-economic development.to realise the goal, the national water harvesting and storage authority seeks to harvest and store 125 million cubic meters of water for multipurpose use. The authority will also construct and maintain 196km dykes to protect lives lost from floods and enhance drought management.
