13 counties in Kenya are grappling with high maternal and newborn deaths with Garissa County leading in maternal deaths and Kirinyaga County leading in neonatal deaths. According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey the maternal mortality rate stands at 355 per 100,000 live births and Neonatal mortality rate stands at 21 per 1000 live births. In a bid to scale down the numbers, AMREF Health Africa has launched a Maternal and Newborn Health Big Bet Initiative bringing together governors from the counties with the heaviest maternal and neonatal deaths burden.
