The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute has issued an advisory to cage fish farmers in Lake Victoria, to either reduce or suspend feeding of the fish, to avert losses stemming from the mass death of fish.
In a statement, KMFRI assistant director Dr. Chrisphine Nyamweya indicated that an early warning system showed a drastic reduction in oxygen levels, due to temperature disruptions caused by the onset of the rains. The system also recorded a change in the lake’s pH levels, which may interfere with gill function, making the fish more susceptible to diseases.
