The Catholic Church has officially closed its missionary operations in Kerio Valley, including the Chesongoch Mission Hospital, due to rising insecurity and violence in the region. The hospital, which served thousands of residents and employed over 100 staff, is now non-operational.
The Missionary Benedictine Sisters cited the brutal killing of Father Allois Bett by suspected bandits as the tipping point. Father Bett, who served at St. Mulumba Parish near Tot, was ambushed and fatally shot while returning from a community mass.
The Church stated that the closure is aimed at safeguarding its staff, sisters, and visitors, while also pushing the government to take decisive action against lawlessness in the area—particularly through disarmament of armed civilians.
