The Inter-University Council for East Africa is working to harmonise higher education systems across all eight partner states in a move aimed at allowing the free movement of skilled professionals without the need for additional certification in another member country.
The harmonisation agenda took centre stage during the opening of the 17th Inter-University Council for East Africa Annual Conference in Nairobi, bringing together more than 400 delegates from across the region.
The council said aligning higher education standards and qualifications is key to deepening regional integration, improving the quality of education and enabling graduates to work across East Africa without facing barriers to the recognition of their academic credentials.
Kenya's Higher Education Principal Secretary, Dr Beatrice Inyangala, who officiated the opening ceremony, said it is still premature to discuss the proposed university funding model, adding that the matter must first be debated in Parliament.
