Government clears BATUK training to resume after diplomatic standoff

The government has agreed to issue the necessary licences and permissions for the resumption of the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) after a week-long diplomatic standoff that saw the United Kingdom announce that it had redeployed its units elsewhere. In welcoming the move, the United Kingdom announced that the scheduled exercise dubbed Haraka Storm will now take place later this year. But even as the two governments resolve the stalemate, the Parliamentary Defence Committee insists that the UK military training programme in Kenya will only resume under full compliance with the revised cooperation agreement, which requires foreign nationals who commit crimes in the country while on official duty to be prosecuted locally.
