The government now says it is targeting to increase power connectivity in rural areas by three percent from 75 percent to about 78 percent if the budget for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) is increased to 14.5 billion shillings. Speaking while launching a new power connection in Mugira village Maragua Constituency of Murang’a County, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira said the increase in REREC’s budget will see an addition of 690,000 homes in rural settings get connected to power. The PS further warned those vandalizing power transformers saying it has been costing the country over 2 billion shillings.
