DRC: Inside the mines fought over by armies and wanted by Trump - BBC Africa
The BBC has gained rare access to the Rubaya mining site in the conflict-hit east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a strategic area where coltan and other mineral extractions could potentially be a key US target.
The recent peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda was meant to raise fresh hope for an end to hostilities in the eastern DRC, but there are still doubts over the prospects for peace anytime soon.
Decades of fighting have killed millions, with rival armed groups imposing their dominance in strategic areas around the region. At the heart of the conflict are critical minerals which both sides are fighting to keep and control.
Now the United States, which negotiated the peace deal between the neighbouring countries, says it also wants a stake in the minerals.
