The Judiciary in conjuction with the prisons department has launched an initiative aimed at decongesting prisons across the country. To achieve this, the programme seeks to review sentences, and where appropriate, release petty and minor offences to perform community service. Courts will also review bail and bond terms of unconvicted persons. The programme will also ensure continuous review of sentences by judges of the high court until they achieve a sustainable prison population.
