The County Government of Nairobi has been challenged to enact laws aimed at protecting widows at the county level.
A group of widows from some of the county’s informal and less privileged areas, say they remain vulnerable and often lack representation when facing social and economic challenges. They are now calling on the county government to put in place legal protections, to safeguard their rights. The widows, who are forming support groups to amplify their voices, say many of them have been subjected to physical violence, discrimination and in some cases disinherited of their spouses’ property. They spoke during an empowerment meeting held in the capital, Nairobi, where they urged leaders to prioritize policies, that protect widows and uphold their dignity and rights.
