Farmers in select counties have started receiving government subsidised fertilizer ahead of the planting season even as government commits to lowering the cost of fertilizer for all farmers in the country to below 3000 shillings. A total of 6 million bags of fertilizer will be distributed to the farmers.
Long queues characterised different national cereals and produce board warehouses in Nakuru and Transzoia counties on Monday, as farmers rushed to get their hands on the fertilizer that is retailing at 3500 shillings a bag amidst complains of delays and high transport cost for the fertilizer by the farmers. According to agriculture CS Mithika Linturi the fertilizer is meant to lower the cost of production for farmers in a bid to lower food prices in the country in the long run.
