The government has tonight scrapped the automatic grants for students joining institutions of higher learning and introduced a new model of funding which will be based on a needs assessment. Speaking in State House Nairobi, President William Ruto said that under the new model, students will be categorized into four, ranging from the most needy to the less needy with the government planning to fully sponsor the education of the most vulnerable students who make up 29% of those joining university and TVET’s this year. President Ruto also announced that the government will increase the funding for universities by over 30 billion shillings in the next financial year as part of efforts to help the cash-strapped institutions to stay afloat.
