The government has defended the introduction of the Maisha card to replace the old generation identity card. According to Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services Prof Julius Bitok, at least 820 public and stakeholder engagements were carried out in a public participation process, including civil society, religious leaders, the private sector, and the media. The PS says the renewal of the card every 10 years is standard practice in various countries including Uganda, Tanzania, and France to undertake fresh biometrics. So far, a total of 972,630 maisha cards have been issued.
