Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, born in Nigeria's Delta State and who grew up in Benin, chose Qing Madi as her pen name. The "Qing". is pronounced as if in “King”, because, as said in her “See Finish” clip, “a (qing) is defined as a super female. It stands for respect and femineity. One who isn’t in need of appointment or opinions to dictate her position”.
Qing Madi’s music blends smooth R&B melodies with Afropop, in a style that her fans have labelled ‘Afro-detrimental’, a term that she herself decide to embrace.
A superfan of Kendrick Lamar, “he’s my mentor, he inspires me in lots of ways”, she says, combining the influence of the US rapper with those of fellow Nigerian Wizkid and even the king of pop Michael Jackson.
