Shea butter: Is your beauty cream under threat from climate change? - BBC Africa
Shea butter is known as ‘women’s gold’. It is a trade that provides an income for millions of women across Africa. The creamy produce from the shea nut tree is used in skincare and food – with the US and EU being the biggest importers. However, environmentalists say climate change is affecting the growth and yield of the trees because of prolonged droughts. Some locals in northern Uganda are turning to an alternative way of making a living from the trees - felling them for charcoal – but that in turn is harming the environment.
