Stakeholders reject move to scrap teachers' hardship allowance in certain areas

The government has been urged to hold further consultations before deciding on the scrapping of hardship allowances for teachers in remote areas. Basic education Principal secretary Julius Bitok who spoke in Baringo, said the government will review the proposal by SRC through further stakeholder engagements. The move follows strong opposition from leaders representing affected regions and teachers' unions, who claim the move is unfair and poorly thought out. The proposal was initially supposed to take effect this July.
