Sugarcane farmers threaten to uproot crop over import concerns

Sugarcane farmers from the Western and Nyanza sugar belts have threatened to uproot the crop, accusing the government of failing to safeguard their interests. In Homa Bay, a section of farmers have resorted to producing jaggery, fearing that the cane might rot on their farms. This comes even as a section of millers reported that they may have to shut down operations due to competition from cheap imports that have flooded the market. Laura Otieno reports.
