Zama zamas: The dangerous life inside an illegal gold mine - BBC Africa
Video filmed by South African miners involved in a months-long standoff with police shows dire conditions as new rescue operations continue underground, where hundreds have been living for months, following a stand off with the government and police operations targeting illicit mining started last year across the country. More than 100 of the illegal miners, known locally as "zama zamas", have reportedly died since the crack down began. But following a recent court order, the government has begun a long-awaited rescue operation. The rescue effort is expected to take several days.
