Kereita forest is located on the southern-most part of the Aberdare ranges. The hiking expedition takes roughly 4-6 hrs. The hike will start from a large open clearing and proceed further into the forest vegetation before descending into the forest river valley. The clearings will then lead us towards tall indigenous trees.
As we penetrate deep into the forest, the undergrowth gets thiker and more varied. Deeper into the forest you will find giant ferns, climbers and majestic mammoth trees standing defiantly in the jungle.
From here the sounds of various monkeys and birds chirping becomes a norm. After a two hour walking up and down the two valleys, the trail will pass through the elephant pool, a natural water body where elephants love to frolic in.
A further one hour walk, we will finally reach the Kereita waterfall on Gatamaiyu river. To the right side of the waterfall is a cave which hosts a small bat population. We will take a rest at the waterfall before we start walking back through an alternative trail that climbs up and out of the forest into the bamboo and finally exit at the forest gate.
