President William Ruto has announced Kenya’s new ambition to raise the annual growth rate of the endangered black rhino population from 5% to 8%, marking a major step forward in national conservation efforts. Speaking on December 9, 2025, during the launch of the new Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary at Tsavo West National Park in Taita-Taveta County, Ruto said the government is committed to strengthening wildlife protection, expanding safe habitats, and accelerating species recovery. The sanctuary is expected to play a central role in safeguarding rhinos and boosting Kenya’s position as a global leader in conservation.
