Burundian traders scramble to leave Kenya amid crackdown

Tonight, we begin with a scramble by Burundian small-scale traders to leave Kenya. Hundreds of Burundian nationals descended on their embassy in Nairobi on Monday, seeking travel documents and assistance to return home. The crowds remained at the embassy throughout the day, as traders rushed to put their travel papers in order following President William Ruto’s directive to crack down on foreign small-scale traders operating in Kenya. On Sunday, thousands were also seen at a bus terminus in Nairobi, boarding buses bound for Burundi. Ben Kirui has more. This evening, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei visited the Embassy of Burundi to engage with Burundian nationals and assure them of government support towards ensuring they are documented or voluntarily repatriated.
