Counties step up preparations ahead of El Niño rains

The country remains on high alert following a warning by the Kenya Meteorological Department of heavy El Niño rainfall from October through to December 2026. According to the Kenya Red Cross disaster risk reduction manager, Peter Murgor, 46 counties are at risk, with over 2 million people likely to be affected. From Nairobi County, which is racing against time to unclog its drainage systems, to Garissa, where proactive strategies are being stepped up.
