Ethiopia is facing fresh tensions in the north, after the federal government and Tigray’s ruling party accused each other of launching new military offensives. The developments have raised concerns that the region could slide back into full-scale conflict, four years after a devastating war that left hundreds of thousands dead. The Ethiopian government says Tigray forces launched a major offensive on Wednesday, describing it as a serious escalation and a breach of the 2022 peace agreement. Tigray’s leaders have rejected the claim, saying their forces are fighting a “defensive” war in response to what they describe as aggression by the federal government. The latest escalation follows months of growing tensions between Addis Ababa and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF, which controls the northern region. The two sides agreed to end the two-year Tigray war in November 2022, signing the African Union-backed Pretoria Agreement. The conflict, which began in 2020, pitted federal government forces and their allies against the TPLF. The war triggered widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis, with the African Union’s mediator estimating that about 600,000 people died. Thank you for watching this video.
