    Village elders have long played a key role in maintaining peace in communities, settling family and land disputes, sharing security information and supporting chiefs in resolving conflicts. For years, however, many say their work came with little recognition despite the risks and responsibilities involved. That is now changing, with the government introducing a monthly stipend for more than 100,000 village elders across the country. In Bonchari, Kisii County, we explore what it really takes to serve as a village elder.
