Grieving mother dolphin carries dead calf for days - BBC Africa

A grieving dolphin mother carried her dead calf for several days during a period of mourning. Fraggle the dolphin has lost her last four calves. ⁣ ⁣ Australian not-for-profit charity Geographe Marine Research, which captured the footage, explained that a high respiratory rate in the calf was a sign that it was unlikely to survive. ⁣ ⁣ Having a calf in winter can be challenging for survival. Drone footage shows that her pod came together to support her during this time. Dolphins may carry their deceased calves during a period of mourning, which can last for many days. Eventually, they must let go and feed to survive.
