Kabras RFC have closed in on KCB at the top of the National Sevens Rugby Series after edging out the bankers 15-5 in the Driftwood Sevens final in Mombasa. KCB lead the standings on 76 points, three ahead of Kabras with two tournaments to play.
Despite the lead, KCB have a mountain to climb in the next two tournaments, which they will play without four of their stars who leave this week for Europe to play for different teams in the newly launched Ultimate Sevens Championship starting next month. Kabras will miss only one player, Kevin Wekesa, and will count on their youthful squad to dominate the last two tournaments in Embu and Nairobi. The Oilers from Nakuru have emerged as the new third force and could spoil the party for either Kabras or KCB. They have proved worthy opponents with at least a semi-final appearance in the last three tournaments. The next tournament is in Embu on the 5th and 6th of September.
