Kenya could have up to four wrestlers at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games for the first time after Calvin Nyatuka and Jemmimah Nakhumicha secured qualification at the third East Africa Regional Development Tournament in Burundi.
Two other wrestlers, Janet Ingweswi and Dan Kegode, are awaiting confirmation from United World Wrestling.
Kenya had an impressive outing at the tournament, winning 31 medals — 18 gold, 10 silver and three bronze. Indoor wrestling accounted for 18 medals, including 12 gold, five silver and one bronze, while beach wrestling produced 13 medals — six gold, five silver and two bronze.
Kenya sent 20 wrestlers to Burundi, with four sponsored by United World Wrestling.
The qualification of Nyatuka and Nakhumicha underscores the importance of regional and continental competitions, which serve as ranking events where athletes earn points towards qualification for major championships.
Team Kenya returned to the country on Tuesday afternoon.
