Cardiothoracic surgeons at Kenyatta National Hospital have performed the first off-pump, or beating-heart surgery at a public hospital in Africa. The procedure is performed on a heart that continues to beat on its own, eliminating the need to stop the heart during surgery. The procedure is part of a week-long cardiac surgery mission that has benefited 11 patients with cardiovascular diseases. Our health and science reporter witnessed the procedure at the Kenyatta National Hospital and has filed this report.
