Nchimbi resigns as Tanzania vice president

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan has accepted the resignation of the country’s Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi. Tanzania’s Chief Secretary, Moses Kusiluka, announced in a statement this evening that the process of replacing Nchimbi has begun. Nchimbi resigned from office earlier today and announced his retirement from politics. In his resignation letter, Nchimbi said he had promised President Samia that they would work together until she chose to appoint a new vice president. His resignation, coming less than a year after he was sworn into office, is likely to raise questions about his relationship with President Samia, particularly following his recent public comments calling for constitutional reforms.
