Normalcy returns to JKIA as airlines clear strike backlog

Normalcy is slowly returning to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a day after the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, KAWU, called off a strike that had paralysed operations and left hundreds of travellers stranded. As of Wednesday, airlines were racing against time to clear a backlog of passengers who had been stranded at the airport for more than 72 hours. The lifting of the strike has come as a reprieve for hundreds of travellers, with domestic and international flights gradually resuming full operations at the country’s busiest airport. KAWU called off the strike on Tuesday following an overnight meeting with the Ministry of Transport and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC, which culminated in the signing of a return-to-work formula.
